Hurricane Season

Forecasters predict the 2010 Hurricane Season will be more active than the previous year with higher than normal threats to the U.S. coastline.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. June and July are considered "slack" months. It's not until the latter days of July and August that the waters in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico have had a chance to warm and the activity ramps up.

Special concerns in 2010 are whether a hurricane will hit the already-devastated island of Haiti and how a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico would affect the giant oil slick created by the explosion on the BP offshore driling platform. Another question is whether a hurricane will come ashore in the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coastal areas, some of which have not yet recovered from 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

Typical tropical activity peaks around September 10. The season officially ends on November 30. If you have a vacation getaway planned during any of these months it may be wise to consider a travel insurance policy to protect your trip investment against this risk.
