IndonesiaASIA Indonesia, May 26, 1999 - The US State Department issued a warning of frequent demonstrations throughout Indonesia, including Jakarta and all the major islands. The political situation is unsettled as a result of the upcoming national elections and the independence versus autonomy plebiscite to be held in East Timor. Although demonstrations in Bali have not affected tourists, serious unrest has occurred in isolated areas and is possible elsewhere on the island. Indonesian security forces have not always responded to the incidents in a timely or effective manner. American citizens should consider whether they want to travel to Indonesia at all during this period. If they do, they should exercise caution and ensure that passports and personal papers are in order in case they need to leave the country quickly. Most importantly, they should register with the US Embassy or nearest Consulate upon arrival.
