Europe

EuropeInternational Health And Safety TravelBriefs Europe, July 22, 1999 - A US State Department report to Congress on the global threat of the year 2000 (Y2K) computer problem revealed that about one-half of the161 nations surveyed face a medium to high potential for computer breakdown in their telecommunication, energy, and transportation sectors. Europe will experience some Y2K-related problems, ranging from minor inconveniences, such as malfunctioning credit card terminals, to sustained power and telephone outages. Most western European countries-- such as England, Denmark, France, and Germany--will have relatively minor Y2K-related problems. However, eastern European countries--particularly Russia and the former Eastern Bloc nations--could have significant Y2K problems. The Eastern Bloc group includes most of the Balkans countries, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. If you are planning to travel around the New Year or in early 2000, you should stay informed of possible Y2K-related problems in the country to which you plan to travel.
