ASIA Nepal, January 13, 2000-- On January 11, the American Embassy in Kathmandu issued a message with the following information to American citizens in Nepal: Maoist groups in Nepal have called for "actions against the government," for various "public-related activities," and for rallies throughout the Far Western and Mid Western districts listed below during the period between January 17 and 24. Further, the Chief of the Maoist Midwestern Bureau has ordered a general strike (called a Bandha) for January 24 in these districts: --Rapti Zone: Dang, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Salyan, and Rukum --Vehri Zone: Bardiya, Bankhe, Surkhet, Jajarkot, and Dailekh --Sethi Zone: Kailali, Doti, Accham, Bajura, and Bajhang --Mahakali Zone: Kanchanpur, Dadelhura, Baitadi, and Darchula --Karnali Zone: Magu, Humla, Jumla, and Tribrikot While no information is available concerning specific activities, Nepalese police have warned that there is an increased possibility of violence in the above-mentioned districts between January 17 and 24. U.S. Government employees and contractors are prohibited from traveling into those districts during this period. The Department of State cautions American citizens to avoid travel to or through these districts from January 17 through January 24. This guidance is in addition to the guidance in the December 23, 1999 Consular Information Sheet for Nepal, which cautions American citizens to avoid travel to or through Jajarkot, Kalikot, Rolpa, Rukum, Salyan, and Sindhuli districts and to exercise extreme caution when traveling to or through Dolakha, Gorkha, Kabhre, Dang, Dolpa, Pyuthan, Ramechaap, Sindupalchok, and Surkhet districts.
