Terrorist Threat, June 27, 2000 – The U.S. Department of State reminds American citizens around the world of the need to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security. From time to time, the Department receives unconfirmed reports that prompt concern about the safety and security of U.S. Government personnel and private American citizens abroad. The possibility remains that terrorists and other groups or individuals may take actions against Americans and American interests. These groups and individuals do not distinguish between U.S. Government and civilian targets. Periods on or around significant dates, such as the August 7 anniversary of the bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, may be chosen as opportunities for further terrorist acts. Security therefore continues to be a prime concern at U.S. Government facilities worldwide. U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad are urged to review their own personal security practices, to be attentive to their surroundings and to exercise caution. American citizens traveling or residing abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. State Department's web site to review the Consular Information Sheets, Public Announcements, Travel Warnings and regional brochures for up-to-date information on security conditions overseas.
